A Day in the Life of UI/UX Designer Hilary Law
Meet Centerfield’s Senior UI/UX Designer Hilary Law. As a member of the product team, Hilary is responsible for optimizing Centerfield’s owned and operated web properties. Read on to get a glimpse into Hilary’s day in the life at Centerfield.
Q: Tell us more about your role at Centerfield.
A: My day-to-day can vary greatly, but that’s a good thing since it keeps my mind actively engaged. I conduct research from across the web through a lens of usability and design, then take my learnings to apply them to our web properties while using best web practices. To determine the designs that outperform the others, we regularly conduct A/B split tests and break down the results to understand the design’s performance.
Q: What’s the coolest thing you are working on right now?
A: I just started redesigning one of our older sites. It’s finally getting some much-needed love. So far, I’ve received some positive feedback from the team for the mobile-first prototype, so now I’m working on a high-fidelity design and then scaling it up for the various screen sizes. I’m excited to see how this new design performs against the default design.
Q: What are your favorite things about working at Centerfield?
A: I love the diversity of industries I get to design for. We have a footprint in almost every industry and each category brings on its own sets of unique challenges so things never get boring. I also work closely with the culture team. I’ve been able to create designs for specialty mugs, hats, shirts, and more, which is really fun.
Q: Any advice for people wanting to do what you do?
A: Have empathy, at least for the people you design for! Intend for your designs to be as easy and intuitive as you can, and really put yourself in the shoes of your users. Don’t be afraid to ask questions you may not want the answers to, because there’s a lot you can learn from those instances.
Q: What is your favorite WFH tip?
A: While it’s important to have an enjoyable workspace, it’s also important to keep it separate from the rest of your home so you can maintain a proper work-life balance. A couple of months ago, I decided to move my stand-up desk to a space with bright natural light. I also added plants to purify the air to bring more life into my urban living space. Since making these small changes, I’ve noticed my productivity and happiness levels improve.
