A Day in the Life of Director of Product Sabrina Sloman
Meet Sabrina Sloman, who joined Centerfield in February 2021 as a result of the Business.com acquisition. As the Director of Product, Sabrina is responsible for collaborating with people across the organization to define, build, and launch new product features and functionality that help drive revenue and user engagement. Get to know Sabrina in our latest “Day in the Life” interview.
Q: Can you explain what your role entails?
A: It’s a fun role because I get to think through the ideas that people have to help the business, decide which initiatives should get prioritized, and work with our engineering team to turn a concept into reality. From there, I measure and assess how the product is performing, and come up with new ideas on how to continuously improve over time.
Q: What’s the coolest thing you’re working on right now?
A: My team’s focus right now is to optimize our paid landing pages to improve conversions and quality scores. The challenge of being able to manage and improve all of the different categories and page types with the end goal of consolidating to a winning template definitely keeps us on our toes. What we think will work doesn’t, and what we think won’t work does – so we let the test results speak for themselves and just continuously iterate and learn until we reach our goal!
Q: What are your favorite things about working at Centerfield?
A: Centerfield has a very strong culture of getting things done, which I appreciate because it feels like we are all collectively going through the ups and downs together as one big team, even if we are working on different things. I also like that Centerfield provides a lot of flexibility on how you get things done, as long as it gets done. This is great for work/life balance – for example, being able to shut off my computer when my kids come home until they go to bed, then logging back on later at night. But most of all, my favorite part is working with my small but mighty team who make my job way more fun.
Q: Any advice for people wanting to do what you do?
A: When I hire product managers, I look for three key things: clear and concise communication, attention to detail, and the ability to effectively collaborate with others. Even without any product management background, I believe that as long as you are strong in those three areas, the rest can be learned on the job with an open mind and hard work.
Q: Can you share a WFH tip?
A: Make use of short-time gaps between Zoom meetings! I have two girls (a 3-year-old and a 9-month-old), a dog, and a husband, so time management is critical. If I have 10-to-15-minute gaps between meetings, I will use the time to do laundry, wash dishes, or clean up. Not only does this free up more time to spend with my kids when they come home from daycare, but moving around without staring at the screen also reenergizes me for my next meeting.
